Academy Week News
June  7 - 12, 2009

The Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy, Inc. has just concluded  one of its most enjoyable weeks ever.   A standing-room-only audience of nearly 500 cheered the closing performance on June 12, 2009,  at Cumberland University.  The Academy welcomed 122 students from  six states.  Over 53 churches were represented by the student body from throughout Tennessee, southern Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Arkansas, and Alabama.

God visited with His wonderful spirit on several occasions, and we enjoyed revival, with students giving testimonials of thanksgiving to God.  Two students testified of their salvation.  We were all blessed Spiritually!   We left with a sincere passion to "do our best for God."

Students enjoyed church songs from the Barry Witcher songbook entitled "Favorite Gospel Songs" and convention songs from the Leoma Convention book entitled "Reach Out."

Daily devotions were given by our Chaplain Jackie Dillehay and other local ministers.

The Do Re Mi  Student Teacher Assistance in Rudiment Training (S.T.A.R.T.) students provided leadership in daily assemblies and assisted in the teaching of the new "Songbirds" class.  Our new "Songbirds" class for ages 5 thru 9, under the direction of Angela Hackett, was a great success.  With this success,  the Academy looks forward to developing a kids singing group similar to our Ambassadors, Do Re Mi Boys, Men's Quartet and Bluegrass Band, that will be available to sing throughout the year.

The  songwriting class,  under the direction of Dr. Byron Reid, wrote another new song, "Tell  It All Day Long."  Our new adult class, taught by Alan Pedigo and Nancy Tucker, received great reviews and will be continued next year.  A Sacred Harp Seminar was presented by Nakayah Box.  Students enjoyed the  new movie and game room.  Swimming and the annual shaving cream fight were highlights of the week's recreational activities.  We will have pictures up soon.

Our students enjoyed special performances by the Do Re Mi Ambassadors, Boys Quartet, Gospel Bluegrass Band, Reid Family Singers, Dunn Family, Bradley Quartet and the cowardly Lion and  Dorothy  from the Wizard of Oz.  We were blessed to welcome our former piano teacher, Jeremy McKissack and his Trio, Shiloh.  Jeremy and Shiloh presented a concert on Thursday night.  Thank you Shiloh for being with us at the Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy.   The Memorial Trophy for outstanding classroom performance was won by Dr. Reid's class.

Our thanks go to  all our Do Re Mi family - students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends.  We are thankful for the many financial assistance scholarships from churches, businesses and individuals to help students attend The Academy.

Until we meet again, keep on singing for our Lord!

With Love to all, Poppa Key.

The Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy Inc. operates for the glory and honor of God. Teaching all ages to sing God’s music and  play various musical instruments to the best of their ability is the mission of the Academy. The shape note method of reading music is used.  Passed on to our present generation, this system gloriously served our forefathers for hundreds of years. The name Do Re Mi represents the seven note syllables of the scale: Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do.

The purpose of Do Re Mi is to preserve and promote the rich heritage of shape note gospel music. Our goal is to improve church music. Following the spirit of God is foremost in our daily activities. Recognizing our daily duty to God formulates our theme, "Doing our best for God." He has done so very much for us.

Individuals, special groups (quartets, trios, etc.),  as well as entire Church choirs, can improve God’s music through the educational offerings of Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy. Private lessons can assist the beginner, as well as improve the most advanced musician. Acoustical instrument training is offered and Bluegrass Gospel is featured.

Browse through our website.   If you need additional assistance, send us an e-mail. If you cannot attend the sessions, please pray for our efforts.
